Music Magazines

IPC Media's NME Magazine

This is 'NME' magazine which often uses 'indie' artists as their cover stars. This specific cover includes 'Arctic Monkeys' and 'The Strokes' which both come under the indie genre. Our advert probably would not be included within this magazine as ours would be classed as 'pop' in which this magazine does not really cover.

This is 'VIBE' magazine which has Kanye West as the cover star. This magazine often features 'pop/rap' artists like him in which our magazine advert could possibly be included in as beyonce comes under the 'pop' genre so the typical audience of this magazine would still be interested in her as an artist in this music culture.

This is a music magazine called 'SPIN' which is generally just 'pop' artists like 'M.I.A' which is featured on the cover of this example. Our advert would definitely be included in this magazine as Beyonce is a very popular pop artist and the readers of this magazine would be very interested in the release of her newest single.

'Q' magazine is one of the most popular music magazines in the industry and includes all different genres of music from pop artists like Cheryl Cole (on the cover) and Lily Allen to more indie style bands such as The Killers. As this magazine has a very broad range of artists, we think that our Beyonce advert is likely to appear in 'Q' given the popularity and fan base surrounding her.

Advert Analysis 2

We like that this poster has bright colours and flowers as it is good to look at and we also like the fact that the word 'Dirt' is spelt out in flowers as it is a complete contrast used very cleverly by the artist. Another positive is the large band name stated at the top of the poster so the audience are instantly aware of what it is for and the small flowery border around the outside of the poster finishes it off nicely.

However, we think a negative to this poster is the fact that there is not an image of the band as it does not promote them and doesn't tell people that may not be familiar with the band name that it is about a group of people bringing out a new song, this poster could be for anything before you read the text at the bottom.

Advert Analysis

By analysing this poster we can see which elements of it we think are good or bad and then we can possibly encorporate some of the good things into our own poster design.
We thought the large picture in the middle of the poster of the artist was a positive as it establishes the singer herself with the audience, making them more likely to look at the poster if they see a familiar artist.
We did not like the fact that the name of the artist at the top was quite small because it isn't highlighted enough to draw the audiences attention at first.

Digipak analysis

Digipak Examples

This is an example of Beyonce's 'greatest hits' digipak. This digipak presents coloured pictures on the front and back but a black and white themed photoshoot for the centre. This looks very affective and as our video has black and white shots and colourful shots, we could adopt this theme for our digipak, using this as our inspiration.

What is a digipak?

What is a digipak?

A digipak is a book style (gatefold) CD cover that is made of card instead of the typical plastic CD packaging. It includes one, sometimes more, plastic trays inside to hold the CD in place. A digipak can have either a four or six template, the six template allows room for more pictures or artwork whereas the four template consists of an album cover, a picture to support the tracklist at the back, a backing picture behind where the CD is held and a picture on the opposite position to this.
The artist typically uses portraits of themselves on  their digipak but others sometimes choose to have artwork to accompany their album to reflect the genre of album and give the audience a broader idea of what they can expect.

We will use a six template for our digipak to show more of the artist's personality and to highlight our variation of locations used in our own music video which will give the audience a greater insight into what is to come and the versatility of the artist.
